Abstract
The present article presents the data analysis and results received during several field researches which were held in 2011–2018 at universities of Milano, Brescia, Perugia, Naples as well as at three schools of Palermo. The aim of this many year survey is to study the functioning and the viability of the dialect among the Italian students. The author considers the intergenerational transmission to be very important for the survival of linguistic varieties in Italy and she uses the term “dialect” according to the Italina social linguistic tradition. The article deals with linguistic preferences of the young people who come from different regions of Italy, their stereotypes, opinions, testimonies and some hypothesis for the future of the dialects is suggested as conclusion. The survey has allowed to find out some relevant regional difference in using the dialect and some common tendencies. In spite of the absolute majority’s desire not to abandon the communication in dialect, the italianization becomes more and more evident and the dialect is getting more limited in its usage, turning gradually into a lower stylistic register. Besides, the international communication which nowadays is a new reality of Italy, endangers much the existence of the dialect.
