Annotation
The article considers the place of language in the ethnic identity of the Tatars. Based on the materials of sociological research in the 1990–2000, it is considered how in the context of the new language policy of the Republic of Tatarstan and the growth of ethnic identity of Tatars living in different regions, the Tatar language acted as the main basis for the self-awareness of representatives of this ethnic community. Significant emotional-value perception of the Tatar language among the Tatars is accompanied by its weak instrumental function, decrease in the proficiency in Tatar and recognition it as the mother-tongue by the ethnic group. This language is also perceived as a symbol of the Republic of Tatarstan. Such association and emotive attitude to the Tatar language does not prevent the strengthening of the Russian language in the national-civil identity of the Tatars of Russia.
