The article is devoted to the analysis of essence of the term “national variant of the Russian language” from the perspective of georusistics, while shifting the main focus from studying language units to global Russian-speaking area, the emergence of which is determined by the pluricentricity of the Russian language. The author proceeds from the idea that the Russian language exists in several forms: “invariant” and “variants”. By invariant we mean “Russian language in general”, a system of linguistic units and relations that form the qualitative stability of the language and its contrast with other invariant languages; a variant is a form of implementation of an invariant in certain positions.
The paper proves the necessity of considering the fundamental differences of researching the Russian language as a tool of interaction within a framework of a particular state and the resulting variation and phenomena of different order, which also include regional differences. These differences in particular determine the ability of Russian language to adapt to the conditions that have developed on the territory of individual states and in which the social interaction of native Russian language speakers proceeds today. In this regard, the article proposes theoretical foundations for building a valid and relevant model of the Russian linguistic world, which reflects the specifics of the interaction of the Russian language with other languages and covers various forms of the existence of the Russian language, which, within the framework of the proposed system, are described from the position of functional identity. At the same time, attention is focused not on the set of social functions they perform, but on their role in the system, which consists in representing the invariant language in specific social, regional, historical conditions.
