Abstract

The aim of the article is to describe and to investigate the current state of sociolinguistic situation in the city of Maykop and its surrounding localities. The article shows those features of the development of the city of Maykop as a resettlement centre at the beginning of its existence and then as a city in the status of the capital of a national-territorial entity that have influenced and/or still have an impact on the language situation in it. The paper studies the key ethnolinguistic components of the sociolinguistic situation (the Russian and Adyghe languages and ethnic groups that use them), showing their dominance enhancement processes above the others. It presents the examples of the language shift, which is especially strong manifested in the situation of the culturally related ethnic groups. The question of the correlation among the language, the ethnic belonging and the self-identification, that is very acute among the Adyghe-speaking population, is fully covered. The article raises the issue of the bilingualism at the investigated territory. The minority ethnolinguistic elements of the situation were divided into groups, the article gives a brief analysis of the state of the some representatives of the groups (Arabic, Armenian, Greek, Tatar, Turkish languages, and ethnic groups). The article considers the factor of connection with the main array of language usage in terms of its preservation in the diaspora.
